The Winkler-Hermaden winery is located on the Kapfensteiner Kogel, an extinct volcano, in southeastern Styria. The winery covers a total of 40 hectares of vineyards. After numerous well-known white grape varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer and Pinot Blanc, the most famous red wine variety, the Blauer Zweigelt, can also be found. Not only the wine grows in Kapfenstein. The oaks for the small wooden barrels also grow on the same soils, in the same climate and on the same Kapfensteiner Kogel. This wine is dedicated to the field marshal lieutenant Arthur Winkler. In 1917, he fought in Hermaden in Upper Italy during the First World War. To honor his service, he was granted the peerage by Emperor Charles I. Arthur Winkler chose "Winkler von Hermaden" to commemorate the fighting in Hermaden. Tasting notes:Strong ruby red in the glass. In the nose aromas of bitter chocolate, eucalyptus and cassis. At the palate pleasant, fruity, after nettle with elegant body and strong tannins. Long lasting in the finish. Grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir. Aging: 24 months in Kapfenstein oak barrels. Soil: Brown earth with volcanic material. Residual sugar: 1,1 g/l. Acidity: 5,8 g/l. Harvest: September and October 2017. Closure: screw cap. Drinking temperature: 16-18°C. Storage potential: Until 2031. The red wine harmonizes very well with game and steaks.
